Terms of Use
Last updated: September 10, 2026
1. About this website
This website is the digital platform for the Hali Yetu Collective, a collaborative initiative that brings together independent organizations working to deepen understanding, dialogue, and public engagement about East Africa’s present and future.
The website is operated and administered on behalf of the Hali Yetu Collective by the Society for International Development (SID), a recognized legal entity registered in Italy, with its registered office at via degli Etruschi 7, Rome, 00185. SID also operates in Kenya through its registered office in Nairobi.
For the purposes of these Terms, references to “Hali Yetu”, “the Collective”, “we”, “us” or “our” refer to the Hali Yetu initiative as represented on this website, while SID is the legal entity responsible for the operation and administration of the website.
The organizations participating in the Hali Yetu Collective remain independent entities. Unless expressly stated otherwise, their participation in the Collective does not mean they jointly operate this website or assume responsibility for its administration.
2. Acceptance of these Terms
By accessing or using this website, you agree to these Terms of Use. If you do not agree to these Terms, you should not use the website.
These Terms may be updated from time to time to reflect changes to the website, the activities of the Collective, or applicable legal and regulatory requirements. The date of the most recent revision will be shown above.
3. Purpose of the website
The Hali Yetu website provides a platform for research, analysis, commentary, dialogue, and public-interest discussion on East Africa and related regional and global issues.
The website may include research papers, reports, articles, commentaries, interviews, videos, podcasts, data, visual materials, event information, and other content produced by Hali Yetu, participating organizations, commissioned authors, contributors, or third parties.
Content is provided primarily for informational, research, educational, and public discussion purposes. It should not be regarded as legal, financial, investment, or other professional advice.
4. Editorial independence and views expressed
Hali Yetu is a collaborative platform that intentionally brings together diverse perspectives. The views expressed in individual publications, articles, interviews, podcasts, videos, or other contributions are those of their respective authors or contributors unless expressly stated otherwise.
Publication on this website does not necessarily imply endorsement by SID, the Hali Yetu Collective as a whole, or any organization participating in the Collective.
Similarly, an organization’s participation in the Hali Yetu Collective should not be interpreted as endorsement of every position, publication, or opinion appearing on the website.
5. Accuracy and availability of information
We seek to ensure that information published on this website is accurate and reliable. However, research, data, public information, and circumstances may change over time, and we cannot guarantee that all information will always be complete, current, or free of error.
Where appropriate, publications will include their publication date and relevant sources.
We may modify, update, suspend, or remove website content or functionality at any time. We do not guarantee uninterrupted or error-free access to the website.
6. Intellectual property and open licensing
Hali Yetu is committed to making its research, analysis, and knowledge products widely accessible for public-interest use.
Unless otherwise indicated, original Hali Yetu publications and other materials explicitly identified as openly licensed are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0).
Under this license, users may copy, redistribute, translate, adapt, and build upon the material for non-commercial purposes, provided that appropriate credit is given to Hali Yetu and the identified author or authors, a reference to the applicable Creative Commons license is included, any changes to the original material are indicated, and adaptations are distributed under the same or a compatible license.
Where practicable, attribution should include the title of the work, the author or authors, Hali Yetu Collective, the year of publication, and a link to the original publication.
The Creative Commons license applies only to material that Hali Yetu or the identified rights holder has expressly made available under that license. It does not automatically apply to third-party photographs, illustrations, graphics, datasets, trademarks, logos, or other material reproduced in Hali Yetu publications or on this website. Such material may be subject to separate copyright or licensing conditions, which will be indicated where appropriate.
The names, logos, and trademarks of Hali Yetu, SID, and participating organizations are not licensed under the Creative Commons license and may not be used in a way that suggests endorsement, sponsorship, or affiliation without permission.
Individual publications or other materials may be issued under different licensing terms when this is indicated on the relevant publication or webpage. In the event of any inconsistency between these Terms and a license expressly stated for a particular work, the license stated for that work will govern the use of that work.
Direct requests for commercial use or for uses not permitted under the applicable Creative Commons license should be sent to our licensing team.
7. Contributions and submitted content
When the website allows users or contributors to submit comments, articles, photographs, recordings, audiovisual material, or other content, the person submitting the material remains responsible for ensuring they have the necessary rights and permissions to do so.
By submitting material for publication by Hali Yetu, you grant SID, acting on behalf of the Collective, permission to reproduce, publish, distribute, and communicate that material through Hali Yetu’s website and related communications, unless different terms have been agreed with you.
We reserve the right to edit, decline, moderate, or remove submitted material when reasonably necessary for editorial, legal, safeguarding, or technical reasons.
8. Acceptable use
You may use this website only for lawful purposes and in a manner that does not interfere with its operation or with the rights of others.
You must not knowingly use the website to distribute unlawful, defamatory, threatening, or malicious material; infringe intellectual property or privacy rights; introduce viruses or other harmful code; attempt to gain unauthorized access to the website or its systems; impersonate another person or organization; or use automated means to extract substantial amounts of website content in a way that disrupts the website or infringes applicable rights.
Nothing in this section is intended to restrict legitimate research, quotation, criticism, journalism, or public-interest discussion.
9. External links and third-party content
The website may contain links to websites, publications, platforms, and services operated by third parties.
These links are provided for informational and convenience purposes. Unless expressly stated otherwise, the inclusion of a link does not imply endorsement of the third party, its organization, its views, or its services.
SID and the Hali Yetu Collective are not responsible for the content, availability, privacy practices, or security of external websites or services.
10. Events and other activities
The website may provide information about dialogues, meetings, webinars, workshops, and other activities organized by Hali Yetu, SID, participating organizations, or partners.
Specific events or activities may have additional registration requirements, participation conditions, safeguarding provisions, or other terms. Where applicable, we will communicate these separately.
11. Privacy and cookies
Personal information collected through this website is processed in accordance with the Hali Yetu Privacy Policy.
SID operates the website on behalf of the Hali Yetu Collective and is responsible for processing personal data collected through the website, except where another controller is expressly identified.
The website may use cookies and similar technologies for essential functionality, analytics, and other purposes outlined in our Privacy and Cookie Policies. Where required by applicable law, non-essential cookies will be used only with the user’s consent.
12. Limitation of liability
The website and its content are provided for general informational and public-interest purposes only.
To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, SID, Hali Yetu, and organizations participating in the Collective will not be liable for loss or damage arising solely from reliance on information contained on this website or from temporary interruption or unavailability of the website.
Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability where such exclusion or limitation is unlawful.
13. Relationship between participating organizations
Hali Yetu is a collaborative initiative rather than a distinct legal entity.
The organizations participating in the Collective retain their legal identities, governance structures, and responsibilities.
Unless expressly agreed otherwise, participation in Hali Yetu does not create a partnership, joint venture, agency relationship, or any other legal relationship under which one participating organization may bind another.
SID’s operation of this website on behalf of the Collective does not make participating organizations jointly responsible for the website’s operation or administration.
14. Governing law and jurisdiction
These Terms of Use are governed by and construed in accordance with Italian law.
Subject to any mandatory rights or jurisdiction available under applicable law, disputes arising from or relating to the use of this website shall be subject to the jurisdiction of the competent courts in Italy.
Nothing in these Terms is intended to exclude rights or protections that cannot lawfully be excluded under applicable national or international law.
